‘Holy’ – What image does this word bring to your mind?
H – honourable
O – one true God
L – love without measure
Y – Yahweh, the most sacred God (Jehovah)
The word ‘holy’ carries a reverence of its own. You cannot say, ‘holy’ and be flippant about it. The angelic beings reverently worship God Most High with heavenly praise, singing “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come.” – Revelation 4:8.
The hymn by Reginald Heber penned back in the early 1800’s beautifully captures their sentiments:
“Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!”
As humans, we strife to be the best self we could be, but we are all fallible. Only the Most High God is Holy and none compares to Him. He is pure in love and resounding in power and majesty. As we continually look to Him, our being is illuminated and our faces radiant His glory. When Moses went to the high mountain to seek God’s council, after he descended, his face shone so much that he had to veil his face from his people. Read Exodus 34:29-35.
Have you seen people whose faces reflect the radiance of the Most High God? When you sit by the fire, your face is warmed. When you draw closer to Him who Is Holy, the One who sits on the Heavenly Throne, that radiance is reflected on you and people immediately see it.
1 Peter 1:14-16 instructs us to be ‘holy’ as God is Holy. ◊
