The letter ‘D’
D – do
O – others first
Ponder on these things:
The command to ‘Do’ is used repeatedly in the Bible. Mary, the mother of Jesus asked the servants at the wedding feast at Cana to “Do what He says to you.” She knew something about the divine nature of Christ even before He started His ministry. Interestingly, the phrase ‘do not be afraid’ is used 365 times in the Bible, giving us assurance for each day of the year.
‘Do’ is and action word and requires us to get out of our sedentary position and complacency. It mobilises us into taking steps and making progress. When we take action, we change the state of things around us. We influence our space in a manner that could be positive or negative. Our action impacts that space and those in and around it. Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana and the guests marveled at the quality and quantity of that product. When you do something, how does it resonate with others? Does it change the atmosphere in a positive way?
The principle of putting others first is highly esteemed down through the ages. Rebecca went beyond her call of duty to draw water from the well to feed Abraham’s trusted servant who was instructed to find a wife for his son Isaac. She was immediately chosen as the one whom he would soon wed. Read this beautiful love story in Genesis 24.
There are countless stories of how blessed it is to put others first. After all, that is the divine nature of God who did not even spare His only Son and sent Him to earth to reconcile us to Himself. What love divine, what act of grace and goodness, such unfathomable act that no words can explain! As recipients of such great benevolence, what do we do?
When we do something for others, we take on the divine nature of Christ and that shows in our whole being. What will you do today to impact your world positively. ◊
