The letter ‘I’ is not always about ‘I’, meaning yourself. The ‘I’ is commonly referring to as the ‘Id’ and the ‘ego’ but not much mention is made of the ‘superego’. Sadly, we live in a world where ‘self’ is glorified and selfishness prevails. That superego is our conscience, which acts as our traffic control officer. It would do us good to act on our superego more often.
‘I’ stands for the image we portray. What image do you portray?
I – impression
M – man (and woman)
A – actions
G – gentility
E – encounters
The impression a man (and woman) makes through his actions, which show gentility (demonstrated by respectful behaviour) in his everyday encounters with others, defines who he is.
We cannot fake or fool people, even if we try because all will come out in the wash some day. Strength of character is underpinned by integrity. Read Psalm 15: 1-5 for a good exemplar.
An unstable man is like water. Proverbs 19:1 (ESV) says, “It is better to be poor and honest, than to be a fool who speaks lies.”
Titus 2:1-15 talks about being self controlled and steadfast in character. Psalm 24:3-4 talks about a pure heart. These are hallmarks that the wise strive for. ◊
