Interestingly, love and mercy go hand in glove! One cannot exercise mercy without being genuinely motivated by love. It is the compassion that we experience when we see the plight of a person that motivates us to act in a merciful way.
Many atrocious crimes committed stem from deep hatred. We might ask how can a human inflict such injury to his fellow man… as though he has no feelings. It is because his conscious is seared by a hot iron. Read 1 Timothy 4:2
When we pray to God to have mercy on us, what are we really asking for? Is it not for compassion and for pardon?
Here is my acronym for mercy:
M – man’s
E – errors
R – redeemed by
C – Christ’s
Y – yielding
I find the story of the unforgiving servant most apt for our daily living. Without exception, we need to guard against our actions and what motivates us to do the things we do. Read the story in Matthew 18:21-35 NIV
The Lord shows us that we should be merciful because He is merciful. That is pure love in action. ◊
