Goodness comes in different packages. It can be an unexpected gift from an unexpected source. It can be a complement from someone who is hard to reach. It can be anything. But if it uplifts your soul, it is a good source. That is why it is called ‘goodness’.
One of the fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 is no surprise – ‘goodness’. The word good contains an inbuilt reward. Kids like to be called ‘good boy’ or ‘good girl’. Dogs respond well to the command of ‘good dog’ and will go out of their way to please you even more. When a worker is seen or called a ‘good worker’, that person will try to live up to that expectation. So, what is the driving force behind it all?
There is a song called ‘Good, good Father’.
The chorus is –
“You’re a good, good Father.
It’s who You are x3
And I’m loved by You
It’s who I am x3”
Goodness works both ways – give and you get!
The opposite is also true. But let us concentrate on the goodness as it edifies the soul. Why would anyone want to constantly go to a somber, grave and malevolent source? There is nothing there to lift your spirits.
When we bask in the sun, we soak up its goodness and warmth. We get enriched by its source of light and energy. Likewise, when we look to God as our Good Father, it is His goodness that supercharges our lives. We then go on to be conduits of His goodness and that makes the world a better place to live!
