Why positive? When we grieve, we feel pain and sorrow. Our hearts ache and we sometimes cannot function as we normally do. We grieve for the person or thing that we have lost. But during that grieving process, our human nature propels us to seek comfort from other souls. We find comfort in sharing our story with others and that’s what makes us human!
Grief is essential as it is the brakes in our highway of life. We sometimes need to stop, slow down and reflect on the true essence of life. We only have one life to live and when we die, we take nothing with us. What we do leave behind which will linger on, is the memories. Memories of the departed are windows into their soul.
When we grieve for a loved one, we dip into their candy jar and pull out the nicest ‘lollies’ to savour. We might even aspire to adopt those sweet treats emanating from their soul and that is a good thing! So you see, grief is a good thing after all. That’s where the deep lessons of life are learnt.
Funerals are solemn times; times of reflection and reconciliation. Ecclesiastes 7:2 (NIV) says, “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.” We ought to do serious introspection. Hagar 1:5 (NIV) says, “Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.” The context here was on the greed and selfishness of people and blindness to the dire needs around them. We cannot turn a deaf ear to the plight of those in need while we roll in luxury and wastefulness. God has not given us a heart of stone but of love and compassion and that is what makes us human! ◊
