As you listen to the beautiful and inspiring song by Kari Jobe called ‘Everyone needs a little’, may your spirits be lifted up. I also found this lovely quote by Erin Majors: ‘A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle’. It is so true of people and of life. There certainly is hope for the hopeless. Even the smallest candle will radiate its light in the biggest dark room because candles work best in the dark.
We are all meant to be a candle to light the way for those struggling in the dark times of their life. I was blessed to have a close friend stand by me in my darkest hours. She got me out of bed when I didn’t see any reason to face the day. She helped bring meaning into my life when there was emptiness and despair. She was my candle in the dark.
In our own little way we can be a candle to someone in need of help, comfort or strength. Matthew 5:16 (NKJV) says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” I received a phone call from a friend who had lost her brother to cancer. She said that she knows he is now free from his pain but she hurts so badly. She talked about the good times they had when they were kids and how he guided and supported her through many important decisions she had to make. She felt so sad inside by the vacuum his death had left.
Rationalising something like death will not make the pain go away. We are human and as we go through grief, we have to let the process take its natural cause. This is where close friends and family can be that candle. Shining steadfastly in the darker moments in life, the candle doesn’t question or debate; it simply does its job by shedding light and warmth.
The Lord Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 (NKJV), “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” We all hurt sometimes but how reassuring to know that when we need a little … there is someone we can turn to who sees us, knows what we are going through and loves us just the way we are. There is hope for the hopeless if you look to the right source.◊
