One thing that we have overwhelmingly come to terms with from Covid is the uncertainty of life. Coupled with the concept of selfishness, is the deep lesson of the resultant pain. One town gets a 24-hour timeframe for lockdown and another town hosts their planned birthday celebrations with much gusto. The sobering question hanging in the air re-echoes – ‘Is life fair?’
Most importantly, in the midst of all the external elements seeking to control us, how is the internal environment of your soul? At the height of this world wide Covid pandemic, is man still self-absorbed, pleasure seeking and selfish? Does he look out for his neighbour or is he so preoccupied with checking the latest gossip from his ‘large’ circle of viral friends? Do we carelessly flick a ‘sorry emoticon’ for the despair of others or do we genuinely reach out and do something tangible?
Life is halted to a standstill with imposed lockdowns but the technology river flows steadily on, ever increasing with momentum of jam-packed ‘emptiness’.
The second of the two most important commandments is, “Love your neighbour as yourself” – Mark 12:28-31. This word ‘love’, is a strong doing word. By your actions, people know the agenda deep within your heart. That is why they say, ‘Actions speak louder than words.’
The parable of the Good Samaritan – Luke 10:25-37 aptly illustrates this point. While others passed by, emotionally detached from the plight of the wounded man who has been preyed on by vile men, one man stopped in the busyness of his life and stretched a helping hand to a complete stranger. Who knows when one day misfortune might greet us and we need the help of others!
What has Covid really taught us all? Are we drowning in the sea of technology? Have we finally learnt the lessons on the true essence of life and the importance of relationships?
“How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?” – Proverbs 6:9 NIV. ◊
