Loneliness is such a hard thing to bear! Being rejected makes you feel like an outcast. It makes you think, ‘what is the purpose of living’. Life becomes meaningless if you have no one to share it with. Life becomes unsatisfying when you sense that you are not needed or wanted by the ones you really care about.
But do take a moment to reflect on life. Naked and alone you came into this world and naked and alone you will depart to meet your Maker. Although some people are blessed to be surrounded by people who really love and appreciate them, not everyone finds themselves in that same situation.
One consolation there is when you do find yourself in a place when you feel rejected and alone is the fact that you are really not alone. There was someone who walked the same journey you might be walking. I recalled this great song called ‘Above All’ which is a source of strength to many. Here is a snippet:
Above all powers, above all kings, above all nature, and all created things… You were here before the world began.
Crucified, laid behind a stone, You lived to die, rejected and alone, like a rose, trampled on the ground, You took the fall, and thought of me, above all.
Watch the whole song here. Although life throws a lot of stuff at us and sometimes we feel we cannot hold on anymore, we are actually not alone.
Jeremiah 23:29 (NKJV) says, ‘Is not My word like a fire?’ says the Lord, ‘and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?’ When we have nothing tangible to hold onto, we can hold onto the Word of God. His Word is a heavy hammer that shatters the obstacles we are facing. His Word is eternal.
Proverbs 18:24b (NKJV) reassures us with these words, “But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” This is confirmed in Hebrews 13:5b, (NKJV) “For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” It is therefore left up to us to make the choice. Do we choose to believe and trust in the Word that has stood the test of time? Where do you put your trust?
Despair leads to hopelessness, despondency and depression. Depression is not a place you want to stay in. Believe me, I’ve been there long enough to know how consuming it is. So ask yourself this question; do you want to have the less of life or the full of life? That, fundamentally is the difference between the words hopeless and hopeful.
I have come to realise that despite the situations around me, despite the people influencing me, I can choose to be hopeful. I came into this world alone and I know I will leave alone but I take great comfort in the fact that I am not alone, even in my darkest day. This gives me the strength to go on. When you feel rejected and alone, think about why you were put here and what impact you want to leave in this world. There will never be another you! ◊
