Wars are turbulent periods of destruction, rampage and violation. They have been the bane of human existence since time immemorial, punctuated with periods of peace.
We read that there will be wars and rumours of wars in the last days. (Matthew 24:6).
As we watch the news and hear of what is happening in Israel, what triggers are we receiving?
There is a song called Days of Elijah, which you can listen to here. We are given signs and signals to mark the times. What do we do with these ‘clues’?
There is a bigger war raging within us; the war within our minds. It is no respecter of persons or age. Young minds are troubled, married couples are fearful and older folk are perplexed and distanced. Do we search for the culprit in advanced technology and modern comforts?
In a world where everything is virtual and at your fingertips, the assumption is that life will be easier. Nothing can be further from the truth. Yes, life is not so labour intensive, but it certainly is ‘mind intensive’. We know that to develop well, the brain needs to have periods of rest; that is why babies sleep so much.
We are bombarded with technology 24/7 and our search for modern comforts keep our minds racing. Why is it that we are never satisfied with what we have? It’s as though we are programmed to shop. We want and want and want, like we are caught in a trap. Ironically, this search for ‘creature comforts’ is creating more stress in our minds and in our relationships. Our homes are becoming our cages and fortresses and our connections and relationships with others is becoming more distanced. In the process, we are becoming less fulfilled, more selfish and disgruntled and our minds are paying for it. We are in a battle of our minds. There is a war raging inside us yet many do not fully comprehend it that way. Where do we find peace?
There is a song for kids called My lighthouse … there is peace for my troubled soul. Matthew 11:28-29 says, Come unto me all you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest (for your soul).
The two most important commandments that Jesus re-emphasised was to love God and love others. Loving God and people rather than things, will anchor our souls and lift up our spirits. It will settle our minds and draw us closer to the people and things that matter the most in our lives. We have one life to live, so live it well and that is what count the most. ◊
